So I have always heard that this is the "best" live dead how ever. I heard that the reason for this assumption is because it was one of the first soundboard circullated shows. Now don't get me wrong the boys were firing on all cylinders that night...but i just don't think it was the best show ever. In fact I don't even think it was the best show of 77. How do you put it ahead of 2/26/77. First terrapin and estimated. I was just curious to see how others felt about this issue. I mean it is all subjective since we all like different eras and different shows. So the question is....do you think 5/8/77 is the best show ever and if not what show do you think is?
Another question I have is does anyone know where tondowload some JGB shows?

Ok......I get what you are all saying but I guess it just comes to personal preference. Like I said in my original post I have heard that 5/8/77 is considered the "best'" because it was one of the first circulated soundboards. Don't get wrong,..I am listening to it now and the show definitely rocks...it is just in my opinion not the best. I would take 5/25/77 mosque over it anyday.
Thanks to the reviewer who suggested garciaradio.com. I am looking for a site that has a lot of JGB for download.

I find I prefer both 5/13/77 & 9/3/77 (AKA Dick's Picks 15) to 5/8. The only things I really find remarkable on 5/8 are the Terrapin (?) and the super-extended Row Jimmy (my favorite part of that show.) 2/26 is not one I'm familiar with, so I can't comment on it....

Probably filler from 5/7/77- I think I have a copy with that (and Eyes?) on it, too.

Best show ever is too tough to judge, much less sell.

Here are my current top five, mostly for particular songs/sequences, rather than "overall", which rarely gets me (ie, every song is GREAT).

6-14-68 (StSt!)
10-12-68 (okay, every song is darn good)
12-29-68 (OOne!)
9-19-70 (DS!)
8-6-71 (Mr Charlie, H2H)

And, I am not sure what everyone's going on about above; I think you are new around here, and you have to get used to folks pulling the leg of any newbie. As has been explained in great detail, the band went on an extended "hiatus" at the close of 74, and from then til Jerry's death, there were only "side projects" in which various band members participated, but the Grateful Dead, per se, were done.

It's all covered in my book; it's been serialized right here at the Forum.

Welcome aboard!

"Side Projects" sounds oddly Black Ops and I am wondering just what you know and who told you, when and why, etc and don't think we can't find you because we already have... Don't Look Back...

the other one > MAMU > other one is really nice on 8/6/71! the h2h tends to usurp the discussions though because it's so f**king outrageous.

You are right, "best" is a very subjective thing. This show has a special place with me because it was one of my first tapes. Even after seeing them a few times, I was like yeah the music is good, but I don't get it. Then I got this tape and had my moment somewhere between Scarlet and Fire.

That said, years later I do think there are better shows from '77. 2/26 Playin>Wheel>Playin makes my head spin every time. Really though, 9/3 is just exactly perfect for my tastes. I like the change in Garcia's tone on the fall tour.

I like Boston Garden the day before 5/8. The Mississippi Half Step, Eyes, Wharf Rat, and TMNS cook.

I believe 5/8 to be the quintessential 77 show hands down and deserves the accolades is receives, but I do enjoy listening to 2/26 far more.

That Playin > Wheel > Playin gets me everytime.

Phil solo at the end of Eyes is tremendous as well.

Oh yea... 1st Terrapin and Estimated too.

Honestly, I don't even think 2/26 was the best show they played in February, much less 1977. I personally prefer 2/27, for which an excellent audience source is available.

As for 5/8, although I do not think it is close to the best show of of the year, I would rank it well ahead of 2/26.

Other strong '77 recs according to nothing but my own peculiar tastes:

4/29
5/9
5/25
6/9
9/3
10/2
10/11
10/29
11/6
12/29

I probably never could pick a best of all time for many reasons but with a gun to my head...Cornell. It may be fashionable but it still holds up and it is great for all the reasons everyone mentions.

I totally disagree with you, but thats what makes it so cool. Don't get me wrong the fire on the mt from 5/8/77 is incredible. But come on....first terrapin and estimated. How about 5/25/77 mosque. That's an incredible show to.

"incredible?"

The only thing incredible about 1977 is how overrated the music from that year is.

Though 2/26/77 is an enjoyable performance, it might be the most overrated show from 1977.

And Terrapin Station is pretty hard to listen to...

What eras of the dead are you into. Personally I like 73,74,75,76,77,78,87,88, and 89. I'm just curious because I can't for the life of me understand how you think 2/26/77! Is over rated

I also believe 2-26-77 is the most overrated show from 1977 and cannot compare to 5-8-77. I agree the Terrapin is nice, although it's not my favorite. On the other hand you have top 5 versions of Row Jimmy, Disco Dancin, Scarlet-Fire, NFA and Dew.

Better shows from 1977 are 5-22, 5-25, 6-9, 10-9, 10-11, 10-29, etc etc

C'mon now Cliff, even Sy was jonesin' for the 2-26-77 matrix!!

I would not say that 2-26-77 is better than 5-8-77 and definitely not better than 5-25-77, 5-9-77, 5-17-77 or 10-29-77, however i think i listen to 2-26 more than most of these shows. In fact I rarely listen to 5-8 if i am listening to '77.

What is it about 2-26-77 don't you like or more to the point why do you think it is over-rated? Please don't say the Terp and the Estimated because i don't even consider those in my rating of 2-26. If you get past that hype of those firsts (which is over-rated) its a damn fine show. Isn't '77 one of those cases where there are 20 shows in the top 10?

"Isn't '77 one of those cases where there are 20 shows in the top 10?"

At least 20

I don't dislike 2/26/77. In fact it just barely makes it into my top ten for 1977.

I just think that performance falls well short of the very best shows from 1977. The musicianship and tightness is not even close to that of the May performances. In fact the playing is rather sloppy at times. And I dont see how debut performances of songs make the show better!

I actually score 1977 pretty highly. But I get bored of it rather easily. The lack of jamming, and the one dimensional and formulaic nature of the performances put me to sleep. Plus Terrapin Station sucks...

It's a consistent and easy year to listen to. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way, but it's equally possible to listen to 1977 shows at work as well as at home. The last two '77 shows I listened to at work were 'To Terrapin' (28/5), and 19/3 - both excellent. This week my Top Ten would include them both.

Top 10 and most overrated? That's saying something!

I think it might the less formulaic and not so tight playing that is makes this show appealing to me. I tend to take '77 in small doses for the reasons you mention. Its great but can get boring if you listen too much. However 2-26 doesn't sound exactly like May '77.
